My name is John Stumpf. My passion is to work, build, create and restore things.  Through the work of my hands, the skills I have learned and applying the creative gifts given to me.

I started My Clarkesville Handyman to serve you. And, to make the ownership of your home and businesses stress-free and enjoyable. So you can have more time to enjoy what you do best and apply the gifts you have been given.

My Background

I’m not your typical handyman. I actually do this work because I love it, not because I have to.

You see, I have been working with my hands since I was 15 years old.  My father was a carpenter/builder known for his quality, craftsmanship in Green Bay Wisconsin. In 1959 he built Vince Lombardi’s home when he became the head coach of the Packers. Coach Lombardi even took me out to his backyard once and attempted to teach me how to properly through a football. It didn’t take, it just wasn’t one of my talents.

Later my father taught me how to use the tools of the trade.  We lovingly restored a huge 1903 King George style home together. We did nearly every detail ourselves. From the oak beams and artwork on the ceilings to electrical and plumbing updates inside the plaster and lath walls. Even the carriage house out back was converted into a functional modern garage maintaining the original charm. These facts alone do not make me a quality craftsman.

My father taught me something he called conscientious quality. Conscientious quality is more than simply doing a job correctly. There’s so much more including trustworthiness, reliability, hard work, punctuality, and common courtesy. His instruction has guided me throughout my work life. First as a US Navy Deep-Sea Diver serving the Sea-Bees with Underwater Construction Team II. As a resort maintenance manager, and until recently as a teacher at a military academy.

My Story

Several years ago the hardest challenge of my life was right before me.  I found myself a single father of six. My wife and best friend of 38 years died after a long bout with cancer. At the time I had three children on their own, one in college, and two girls in high school. I had a job that took me away six days and nights a month. The girls were home alone way too much.

I was working, cooking, cleaning, and very lonely. The house and yard maintenance was on the back burner, way back out of reach. The hospital and doctor bills were a mile high. The only thing I could do was to just keep praying and keep on keeping on. Each day, was one step in front of the other taking one day at a time. Then I met a new best friend and married her just over a year ago. And that has changed my life incredibly.

Now we together are left with six on there own, two in college and one in high school. The hard lessons of life and time have not robbed me of strength, energy, enthusiasm or passion to hope and live. It’s the perfect time for me to start a handyman business. I know it may sound odd to start offering handyman services at this point in life. But here’s the deal… I love working with my hands and helping people – and a handyman service is just a perfect fit.

Now I love what I do, I’ve developed a skill set to fix or build just about anything!
